REVIEW: Waiting for Jonathan to Act

This review was written by a prominent Nigerian citizen, activist, and news paper editor in chief. After reading his post on facebook last night, I strongly agree with him on the positions he took as to the resignation of the security chiefs in the nation as they have proved very incompetent on their jobs.
by Bayo Onanuga

President Jonathan must surely be sorely embarrassed today that the Boko Haram bombers exploded their arsenal in several places, almost with impunity, making a mockery of the entire Nigerian security system. The IG of police, the SSS chief, the NSA, all by now should have resigned if they have dignity and if they are truly responsible men.

President Jonathan should also by now be tired of sounding like a bad record after every tragic bombing in our country. Always expressing regrets; always promising to act. Usually issuing hollow statements that no longer mean anything to our people.

Mere platitudes cannot bring back the dead or console those who have lost loved ones. The people of Nigeria deserve protection from their government against these campaigners of terror.
Jonathan must do more than he is trying to do by effecting a true transformation in Nigeria's security apparatus.
Let him compare notes with the British or the Americans after they were bombed by Al-Qaeda. They didn't leave their security arrangement the way it was then.

Jonathan's security advisers(most of whom ought to have resigned or given the boot in a normal nation) are merely fooling him if they keep telling him that the present police or SSS structure will prevent future bombings. Security, intelligence gathering, policing, must have local, community roots, which is why advocates of state or community police are making a lot of sense.

How many more bombs and many fatalities must our nation and people experience before this President acts? How many more Nigerians does this leader want to be bombed to death, before doing the job he was voted to do last May?

Act now, President Jonathan, as another time bomb is ticking away somewhere in Nigeria!
