South Africa bans Christ Embassy ‘miracle’ slots
The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASASA) has banned all television programmes about “miracles” by the Believers LoveWorld Incorporated, (a.k.a Christ Embassy) headed by pastor Chris Oyakhilome.
According to a report in The Cape Times, the regulatory body on Wednesday ordered that the “faith healing” programme anchored by Mr. Oyakhilome be pulled down from E.tv on the grounds that the miracles and healing could not be substantiated.
The Cape Times reported that the ruling came after a group, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) petitioned ASASA in 2009 that the programme be pulled down from the airwaves. The action campaign came forward after a woman in Cape Town stopped her tuberculosis medication after she claimed she had been “cured” by the church, but died later.
According to Nathan Geffen of TAC, the programme was destroying people’s lives based on the unsubstantiated miracle claims.

Police nab seven bank staff for N75m fraud
Seven staff of Bank PHB are in police custody for allegedly defrauding the bank of N75million.
The suspects include Idowu Makunjuola, Akinwale Olugbemi, Ajunwa Solomion, Peter Tarie, Isaac Ukpe, Kehinde Aiyebodofor and Gabriel Onigboke.Also arrested in connection with the fraud are Abiola Ologodade, Bode Olofin, and Ajayi Abayomi; suspected to be the brain behind the fraud.The suspects were arrested by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba on January 28, following a complaint by the bank.Spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, Samuel Jinadu, said the suspects were able to hack into the accounts of customers with a device called the Keylogger.
Arik gets approval to fly to Turkey
The Federal Government has approved Arik Air as one of Nigeria’s private airlines permitted to fly direct from Abuja to Istanbul starting from June this year.
The Minister of Aviation, Fidelia Njeze, said while speaking during President Goodluck Jonathan’s meeting with the organized private sector (OPS) in Istanbul that this follows a new negotiation on the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) signed between Nigeria and the Republic of Turkey. Mrs. Njeze said, “By June this year to be precise, Nigeria’s side of the BASA would come into play. Good enough, Arik is now collaborating with Turkish Airline in that aspect and by June, Arik will start flying from Nigeria to Turkey and that would now fulfil the Nigerian aspect of the BASA”. Prior to this new arrangement, Turkey was the only beneficiary of the BASA arrangement with Turkish Airline operating flights operations into the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, at least three times in a week. Speaking further on the government’s plans to remodel and build five terminal buildings, at major international airports in the country, the Aviation minister said, “we have done quite a lot in trying to improve on the ambiance, that is the comfort. The ambiance is what the passengers feel and that is what will engender confidence in the safety and critical equipment we have put in place.” She noted that, “Nobody travels by sea or by road from country to country it is by air and investors coming in, it is what they see at the airports that will actually give them confidence to invest in a particular country. And that is why government is conscious of it, that we need to transform our airports,” Mrs. Njeze said. She further emphasized that government cannot isolate airport infrastructure development “from our Vision 2020 aspiration. The need to transform our airports to me is key in our Vision 2020 aspiration. We must transform our airports because that will help investors to really come and invest in the country”.
The Chairman of Arik Air, John Arumemi-Johnson, who was part of the private sector delegation, in a chat with newsmen in Istanbul said he was elated that Airline was selected to fly the Istanbul route and assured Nigerians of the airline’s competence to deliver on its objectives. Thanking Mr. Jonathan for approving the airline for the operations, the Arik boss pledged his commitments to continue to contribute his own quota to the overall development of the aviation sector.

Egypt Protests Turn Violent
Eight days of peaceful demonstrations against the 30-year reign of Egypt’s President, Hosni Mubarak, turned violent yesterday as the president’s supporters engaged the protesters in a free for all. The Tahrir (Freedom) Square in Cairo which has been the central point of the demonstrations became a battlefield with rocks, sticks and even chairs used as missiles by opposing sides. Reports say at least one person was killed and over 400 people injured in the ensuing melee which threatened to turn Egypt into an anarchical state.
The violence began when Mr Mubarak’s supporters began to converge on the square from different directions, shouting slogans in support of the president and against the demand by thousands of protesters who have daily gathered there to demand the president’s resignation. “We are Egyptians too, and we want Mubarak, we like Mubarak,” said a member of the pro-Mubarak group. One of the placards they carried noted, “30 years of stability, nine days of anarchy.”
The protests continued into the night, in defiance of the curfew instituted by the government and sporadic shooting were heard near the square although it was not immediately clear who was doing the shooting. The Army released a statement saying it was not responsible for the gun shots. UN secretary General Ban ki-Moon also urged restraint saying, “Any attack on peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable and I strictly condemn it.”
As night descended on the city, the violence seemed to wane and ambulances were finally seen inside the square trying to evacuate the injured. Although the different groups of protesters had by then stopped fighting, the square was hardly deserted as people continue to troop in even as security men turned their water hoses on the crowd. The streets of Cairo were also said to be manned by civilians who erected roadblocks, checking people’s identity cards before letting them past. Reports say a general feeling of insecurity pervaded the nation which has been for decades one of the most stable Arab nations.
