Lagos assembly may order closure of LASU, LASPOTECH campuses

The Lagos State House of Assembly has threatened to close down all the satellite campuses being run by the Lagos State University, Lagos State Polytechnic, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education within the state.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Bola Badmus-Olujobi, disclosed this yesterday during a visit of a 7-man ad hoc committee set up by the House to probe the de-accreditation of some courses at the Lagos State University. The committee is also to probe the state of infrastructure of all the institutions owned by the state government.

Obasanjo's candidate gets INEC's nod at final collation

I don't know why this grandpa wants to be governor. Instead of him to just go and sit down in his house... I hope PDP does not win Ogun State.

The battle to control power in Ogun State went in favour of Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday as his candidate in the governorship primaries, Tunji Olurin, got the final nod of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Mr Olurin, a retired general and Mr Obasanjo's preferred candidate, was elected at a parallel congress from the one in which Gboyega Isiaka, who is governor Gbenga Daniel's chosen heir, was named winner.

Mr. Obasanjo and Mr. Daniel have been engaged in political battles, trying to ensure that their candidates emerged winner.

Mr. Olurin's name surfaced on the electoral commission's final list of those cleared to contest the 2011 elections last night barely 24 hours after his name and that of Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, a senatorial candidate, were reportedly dropped.

Halle Berry to fight for custody of daughter

Halle Berry says she's preparing to go to court with her ex Gabriel Aubry over custody of their 2 1/2-year-old daughter Nahla.

"Halle has serious concerns for her daughter's well-being while in the care of her father for any extended period of time and is prepared to take all necessary steps to protect her," the actress's rep tells PEOPLE.

To clear her schedule for custody litigation, Berry, 44, pulled out of the film "New Year's Eve," set to start filming this week in New York. She's being replaced by Katherine Heigl.

"She has attempted to resolve these custody issues amicably with her daughter's father, Gabriel Aubry, directly, but given his lack of cooperation, Halle has no choice but to seek swift judicial intervention," her rep says.

Aubrey, 35, filed court papers December 30 seeking to be formally recognized as Nahla's father and to establish that he'll share custody. The couple split last April.

There was no word on what prompted the custody dispute.

Berry's rep says, "Halle has always made the needs and safety of her daughter her first priority and, both while Halle and Gabriel were a couple and since their break-up, Halle has only acted in her daughter's best interest."

Customers Rush to Update Bank Accounts

After the one month extension given by the Central Bank for customers to update their account, queues were still seen at banks yesterday as people tried to meet the deadline.

Bank customers hurried to get their accounts updated yesterday at some of the banks visited. In December, the Central Bank directed banks to carry out updates on customers profile in furtherance of its ‘Know-your-customer’ requirement. It added that customers who fail to comply will no longer have access to their bank accounts.

Customers at First Bank on Olowu Street, Ikeja were on queues at the banking hall trying to get their accounts updated. Due to the slow movement of the queues arising from the cumbersomeness of making photocopies of some of the documents required, some customers could not hide their frustration. They lamented that the bank’s protocol was too much as other banks did not require some of the items they requested for.“They are asking for many things,like utility bill, passport photographs and other things. I have been to other banks and their protocol is not like this, maybe that is why this queue is not moving” Kemi Adeyemi, a bank customer said.

Danjuma, one of the security officials said the queue has been increasing since last week. “Today being the last day, the queue is worse” he said.

Buhari names Bakare as running mate

Sorry this is coming late on TRENDS as you might have read or heard this somewhere but for the record of TRENDS by Bukchris, The presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Muhammadu Buhari, has announced Tunde Bakare as his running mate in the April 9 presidential polls.

The choice of Mr. Bakare, the fiery preacher and general overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Lagos, was announced in a statement by the spokesman of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Yinka Odumakin.

The statement said that Mr. Buhari hinged his choice of Mr. Bakare “on the need to put the best feet forward” in the forthcoming presidential contest. His name has been forwarded alongside that of the former head of state to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
