I Use My Earnings For My Education... 10yr Old Cobbler.

A 10-year-old cobbler, Hameed Mojeed, has stated that he engaged in the repairs of shoes to sponsor his primary education.

Mojeed, who is a primary three pupil of Methodist Primary School, Adatan in Abeokuta, told Punch Metro that he was the first child of a broken home.

He also said that he had engaged in the trade for three years, adding that he learnt the trade when he was four years and graduated at the age of seven. He said he had been mending shoes on the major streets of Abeokuta since 2007.

He said, “I live with my paternal grandmother in Abeokuta and I repair shoes to fend for myself and sponsor my education".

“I engage in this trade during weekends and on holidays. Sometimes when I close from school, I quickly move around to repair shoes. I make between N600 and N1,200 per day, which I give to my grandmother for our upkeep.”

He said that his grandmother engaged in a menial job, washing locust beans at the river side for survival.

The cobbler, who lamented poor parental care, blamed the development on a broken marriage.

He said that his father, a trailer driver in Lagos State hardly visited him, adding that occasionally when he did, he only gave him N100 for his upkeep.

He said, “My mother, Isiwatu, has not been visiting me but whenever my father calls, he gives me N100, though not every time.”

As expected, Mojeed’s business is having a telling effect on his education as the primary three pupil said that he took 23rd position out of the 25 pupils in his class in the last term examination.

He said that he sponsored his education from his earnings as a cobbler.

Though he was not categorical on whether he was the one responsible for the feeding of his grandmother, he explained that his daily income was usually given to the woman.

Mojeed, who claimed that he learnt the trade from an uncle in the Adatan area of Abeokuta for three years, said that his grandmother asked him to do the job to make ends meet without his father’s knowledge.

“I have no shop, I always walk from one place to the other to mend shoes for people, it is when I am going home at night that I board a taxi back to my home,” Mojeed said.

Though he appeared not disturbed by his poor performance in school, he insisted that he was interested in becoming an engineer in future.

THE BANKER Names Sanusi CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR of The Year 2010

 

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, has been named by The Banker, a global financial intelligence magazine, as the World Central Bank Governor for the 2010 financial year.

The Banker, a publication of Financial Times, London, which is regarded as the most influential newspaper in the world, is a global financial intelligence magazine published since 1926.

It is a publication that provides guide to bank ratings and analysts globally, and the definitive reference in international banking for finance experts, governments, chief finance officers, central bank governors, finance ministers and other decision makers globally.

A statement signed by the Country Representative of the magazine, Mr. Kunle Ogedengbe, noted that the apex bank governor won the award owing to his resolve at “salvaging a crumbling financial sector.”

The magazine noted in its 2011 January edition, which will also be distributed at the World Economic Forum, Davos, Switzerland, that in the last 18 months, Sanusi had implemented series of reforms that had return Africa’s second biggest financial market back to recovery.

The Editor of the magazine, Mr. Brian Caplen, in the statement, said that the CBN governor was unanimously chosen by the panel of judges out of the many candidates, whose names were submitted for the award due to some of his striking qualities.

Caplen listed some of the qualities that earned Sanusi the award to include his radical anti-corruption campaign aimed at saving 24 banks on the brink of collapse, as well as securing convictions of some of their chief executives.

Others are pegging the tenure limit of banks’ CEOs at a maximum of 10 years, and strict disclosure of financial records in the books of Deposit Money Banks.

He noted that the reforms of Sanusi would enhance the quality of Nigerian banks, establish financial stability in the system; provide enabling and healthy financial-sector evolution, as well as ensure that the financial sector contributed to the real sector rather than just serving the banking sector alone.

US Based Make Up Artist SEGUN GELE Weds

US Based Makeup Artist and Gele(head gear) expert, Hakeem Oluwasegun Olaleye , a.k.a Segun Gele has made a name for himself in the United States of America as an expert in creating show-stopping headgear (gele) styles and beautiful makeover. He has made a living out of tying gele and has transformed hundreds of brides on their wedding day.

Segun Gele, who arrived in US from Nigeria in 2003, has successfully built his brand into a flourishing business and a household name. He is presently cleaning out big in America .He was recently on the American Cable News Network, CNN, which was fascinated by his exotic headgear and makeup. The latest gist about this talented makeup artist had to do with the matters of the heart. On Thursday December 23, 2010. Segun Gele walked down the aisle with his heartthrob, Morenike Oluwafunmilola Sotunde, a Customer Service Rep at the Bi-Courtney Aviation Services, MM2, Lagos.

The news of his wedding actually came as surprised to a lot of people, reason been that he has been very engrossed in his work and this year, had been a good one for him as he has been shuttling between UK and America, and even Nigeria as the demand for his work increased unprecedently. So it was surprising to a lot of people when he officially announced his wedding, a couple of weeks back. He arrived in the country, few weeks back to finalize the plans.

The marital rites commenced in the early hours of Thursday at the Bride’s residence in Surulere. This was followed by the holy solemnization at the African Bethlehem Church, Ebute Meta, Lagos.Guests were afterwards treated to an A-class reception at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Staff School Hall, Lagos.

A lot of Segun friend’s based in America and UK all stormed Nigeria to witness the occasion.

We asked him how he met and fell in love with his wife, since he is based abroad and the wife, in Lagos, Nigeria, he responded thus “After my dad's burial in October last year, I came home for the 40days Fidau prayer which was in december and stayed back for Christmas during which I attended an Christmas gathering in Isolo where I met my wife Oluwafunmilola. And I will say ours was ordained by God as we both knew it was love at first sight. We both knew we would be getting married. Distance wasn't a barrier because we spoke everyday since Dec 25th of last year and never got tired on the phone. We became Best Friends.And since we had a clear vision of what we wanted, I introduced her to my family in Jan 2010 before going back to the USA; after which I accepted the offer to come co-ordinate a friends wedding in Feb 2010 where I proposed to her in the presence of her mum and my brothers.”

What are those qualities he admired in her? Segun was asked “ The first thing that attracted me was her composure at the Christmas gathering; where other girls were flaunting themselves Funlola sat down quietly in one corner and only made logical contributions to the topic being discussed giving room to her elder brother to do most of the talking. My “Sugar”is quiet, respectful, humble, submissive and Content; what else would a man ask for?

Is It True That Placing A Laptop On My Lap Lowers My Sperm Count?

Men and teenage boys should think twice before placing a laptop computer on their laps as they can be “cooking their sperm”  and reduce their chances of having a child. If you are male, thinking about having a family, or even a decade away from planning a family, you may be better off placing your laptop on a desk.

The findings are reported in Europe's leading reproductive medicine journal Human Reproduction. They show that using a Laptop on the lap increased the left scrotal temperature by a median 2.6°C and the right by a median 2.8°C. Several previous studies have shown that increases in testicular or scrotal temperatures of between 1°C and 2.9°C are associated with a sustained and considerable negative effect on spermatogenesis and fertility.

Laptops can reach internal operating temperatures of over 70°C. They are frequently positioned close to the scrotum, and as well as being capable of producing direct local heat, they require the user to sit with his thighs close together to balance the machine, which traps the scrotum between the thighs.

The researchers worked with 29 healthy volunteers aged 21 to 35, measuring scrotal temperatures with and without laptops. Two to one hour sessions of scrotal temperature measurements were performed on different days in the same room with a median room temperature of 22.28°C. The men were dressed in the same casual clothing for each session and sessions with and without a laptop were conducted at the same time of the day. Body temperature was taken by mouth beforehand and each volunteer spent 15 minutes standing in the room to adjust to room temperature before being seated. A non-working Laptop was placed on the lap so that the volunteer could adopt the right position to balance the laptop, then removed, and the seating position held for one hour, with scrotal temperature being measured every three minutes. The same procedure was repeated for one hour, with the same baselines controls, but this time with a working laptop. The temperature of the bottom surface of the Laptop was also measured at intervals.

They found that scrotal temperatures rose by 2.1°C when the men sat with their thighs together, which is necessary to keep Laptop on the lap. But, the rise was significantly higher when the Laptops were used 2.8°C on the right side and 2.6°C on the left. It shows that scrotal temprature raised by both special body posture and local heating effect of Laptop.

The median surface temperature of Pentium 4 computers used increased from nearly 31°C at the start of the experiment to nearly 40°C after one hour.

All laptop computers generate significant heat due to the increasing power requirements of computer chips. New laptops with higher power requirements may produce even more heat. So far, computer fans and 'heat sinks' are not sufficient.

It's possible that external protective devices like in the picture above could somewhat help, but it is essential to confirm their protective effect in a clinical study to prevent commercial advertising and use of inefficient and useless products.

Safety Tips You Should Always Remember When Boarding an "Okada"

Hmmmm, let me add this, me I do okada's, I love them when I have to hurry somewhere and there is traffic. No forming Okay. Wole Soyinka did Okada too. He used it to escape death from Abacha, he even used it during the lagos Carnival in 2010 to beat traffic. My father once used Okada on two occasions, his car broke down the first time and secondly he had an appointment for a big contract and there was heavy traffic, so he parked his car, pulled off his Agbada and jumped on an Okada (This is someone who is always shouting on me when I use Okada) and So weather you are poor, rich, young, old and you live in Nigeria, you might just find yourself doing okada for one reason or the other.

Okada refers to commercial motorcycles in Nigeria, where motorcycle riders carry passengers for hire. The name Okada is borrowed from the then popular Airline in Nigeria, Okada Air. A local airline that was not popular for its confort but remained the most used local airline in the country. The first group of motorcycle transporters were then given this name, okada because they could manoeuvre between the heavy traffic of Lagos and take you to your destiny in time, just as Okada Airline did. 

Because of the comic irony of this name being used for a cyclist and for the popularity of the airline, the name okada for the commercial motorcyclist was never to be forgotten and eventually became as popular as it is now. Many people do not even remember that there was any thing like Okada air any more.

Okada began to gain popularity in the late 80s when because of economic difficulties in the last years of the first decade of the Nigerian economic crunch, some jobless youths began to use this age-old transport system for commercial purposes, to transport some stranded but willing passengers through the narrow or bad roads to the far inaccessible parts of the cities or villages. 

It is one of the chief modes of transport in Nigeria and, by far, the most common form of informal transport system in that country. It is easily affordable for the common man and very flexible. Above all okada is readily available: one can hardly wait too long for an okada to come around, even in the remotest villages they appear at given intervals. There is no road too narrow or a place too remote for Okada. 

It became for the common man a welcome alternative to the sometimes short but often long walk to-and-fro home after a long journey or a days job - a short trekking under the sun (for example from a commercial car park where the passengers are picked or dropped collectively) that is more tedious and arduous than it looks. For these reasons okada became quickly beloved and did not take long to convince its critics and soon the fears or resentments of the early inception were dissolved into calculable risks that accompany all transportation. 

The popularity and widespread acceptance of okada has rapidly risen in recent years. It has become a regular means of transportation for the young and old, man or woman. Unfortunately, the rise of okada has been accompanied by increased levels of high-risk behaviour and accidents on Nigerian roads; as a result they have come under heavy flak culminating in legislations restricting or prohibiting their operations in some Nigerian cities.

Some safety Tips to know:

i. Only one passenger at a time. Not two or three like:

ii. Pregnant women should stay off Okada.

iii. Always caution your Okada driver.

iv. Don't do long distance on Okada.

v. Always wear a helmet. Not plastic bowl like in the picture below

VII. Never do Okada's in the night. Its a one way ticket to your maker.
